The musty smell of the secondhand bookstore clung to Amelia as she examined the letter. It was tucked inside a well-loved copy of *Pride and Prejudice*. The script was loopy and elegant, clearly written by a woman. A blush crept up her neck, and she felt a heat building in her chest.

She scanned the first few lines: “My dearest Edward, I shall wear the lavender dress, just as you requested. Meet me beneath the willow at dusk.” Amelia’s breath hitched.

Her gaze darted around the quiet bookstore, as if someone would know she was reading a private confession. She stuffed the letter back into the book, her hands trembling. It was as if she'd accidentally eavesdropped on an incredibly intimate moment, something she was never meant to witness.
