The doorbell rang at an inopportune moment, just as David was trying to impress his date with his culinary skills. The delivery person handed him a box addressed to “Professor Davies.” David’s cheeks flushed crimson. The previous tenant had been a professor.

"Thanks," he mumbled, trying to hide the package from his date.

He quickly opened the box. Inside was a collection of academic journals. He felt a wave of discomfort as he imagined his date questioning him about it. He hastily stuffed the journals into a drawer and quickly returned to the kitchen, hoping his date hadn't noticed. He was failing as a cook and now as a resident of the apartment.
