The estate agent kept chattering, but Emily couldn't hear her. The house, her childhood, was being reduced to splinters. Her legs felt weak. She thought she might faint.

She excused herself from the estate agent, muttering about needing fresh air. She stumbled outside, away from the polite smiles and the relentless chatter. She felt a cold sweat prickling her skin.

She stood in the garden, the air thick with the scent of freshly turned earth and broken wood, and fought the urge to run. Her hands trembled, her throat constricted, and she felt as if she might explode.
