The scholarship ceremony was supposed to be a triumph. Sarah had meticulously planned her outfit, practiced her acceptance speech, and envisioned the joy on her parents’ faces. Now, standing on the stage, she heard the Dean's stammered apology. A mix-up. The scholarship had been awarded to her in error.

Her carefully constructed facade began to crumble. She felt a cold sweat prickling her skin. The faces in the audience blurred. The applause, moments before a symphony of encouragement, now felt like a mocking echo. She gripped the podium, her knuckles white.

She felt a tightening in her chest, a suffocating pressure that made it difficult to draw breath. She wanted to run, to disappear into the crowd. She forced a smile, a grotesque caricature of happiness, and managed a few mumbled words of thanks, each syllable a monumental effort.
