He was at the library, browsing the history section. She approached cautiously, her voice soft. "Michael? Remember me? We used to build forts in the woods behind your house."

He turned, his eyes scrutinizing her, his expression unreadable. He blinked slowly, as if trying to place her, but the recognition never dawned. He shook his head, a polite apology on his lips. "I'm sorry, I don't think I know you."

The room spun. She felt dizzy, like she was about to fall. The smell of old books suddenly became overwhelming, suffocating. She gripped the edge of a nearby shelf for support, her knuckles white. She looked around to see the other people in the library, as if they were all staring and judging.
