The party was a disaster. She'd known it would be when she saw him standing by the bar. The years hadn't been particularly kind to her, but he looked fantastic. She’d approached him, ready with a witty remark. "Sean, fancy seeing you here!"

His eyes met hers, and he politely smiled, with no spark of recognition. He tilted his head. “I’m sorry, do I know you?”

The music, which had sounded inviting just moments before, now throbbed in her ears. She forced a chuckle, feeling the sting of tears prick her eyes. She felt the sudden urge to run, to escape the polite inquiries, the forced small talk. She muttered something about having the wrong person, and stumbled away, her cheeks burning.
