The room seemed to spin. The CEO's upbeat tone grated on her nerves. The announcement had been made: the company was being sold. She struggled to maintain her composure, to look interested, to appear happy. The very idea of the new owner made her stomach churn.

Her mind was a jumble. She’d just been promoted. She’d been planning to buy a house. All of her plans, all of her future, felt as if they were dissolving before her eyes.

She stood abruptly, ignoring the stares of her colleagues, and slipped out of the conference room. She sought out the solitude of the stairwell, leaning against the cold, metal wall.
