Agnes shifted uncomfortably in her seat, the plush velvet of the antique chair suddenly feeling coarse against her skin. The annual doll convention was always a trial, but this year was different. Her daughter, little Lily, had inherited Agnes's passion for porcelain dolls with a fervor that bordered on alarming. Lily, barely seven, was now presenting a doll made entirely of human hair, sourced from "donations" (Agnes suspected the school playground). A hush fell over the room as Lily, cheeks flushed with pride, described the intricate braiding. Agnes wanted the floor to swallow her whole.
