The bastion of their family's social standing. She had always viewed it as a symbol of their success.

Clara's breath hitched. She felt her face burn as she re-read the letter. A subtle sense of embarrassment washed over her. It included phrases that were almost apologetic, almost begging. She imagined her father, a man she had always seen as unflappable, composing this missive.
