She squeezed her eyes shut, then slowly opened them again, forcing herself to read the letter one more time. Her older sister's resignation from her dream job, the magazine she loved. She’d always envied her sister's confidence, her independence. This letter shattered that image.

Her hands were shaking. She couldn’t believe this was real. She felt a burning sensation behind her eyes. Why had she never known? Why had her sister pretended so long?

She pushed back from the table, knocking over a glass of water. It shattered on the floor, the sound echoing in the sudden quiet of the room. She was on the verge of tears. She had to get out.
