From across the restaurant, Emily saw the curve of her mother's back, stiffening with each passing word. Her mother had requested this lunch, but Emily now wished she'd declined. The truth, delivered in a hushed, tearful confession, was like a physical blow. A secret child, a shared father, a completely unknown sibling.

Emily stared at her plate of food, a plate that now seemed utterly unappetizing. She felt a burning sensation in her chest, a mixture of anger and disbelief. She didn’t want to look at her mother, at the woman who had fostered the facade, the lie.

She picked at her salad, pushing the leaves around her plate, each movement deliberate, precise. Her usual appetite had vanished. She felt a profound sense of disorientation, as though the ground beneath her feet had shifted and cracked.
