The letter arrived in the mail: a notification of a new zoning regulation that would drastically alter the neighborhood. It had been signed by the members of the Homeowners Association. And there, at the bottom, was the signature of Arthur Jenkins, his neighbor.

He'd assumed Arthur was a retired accountant. A quiet man who kept to himself. The attached list of Arthur’s accomplishments was astounding. Arthur Jenkins had built the entire housing community. His mouth felt dry.

He recalled his criticisms of the HOA, his complaining about the slow pace of neighborhood projects. He wanted to vanish.
