The sun seemed blindingly bright as Mrs. Ramirez stated her case, gesturing towards the towering sycamore. “The roots, they’re… aggressive.” His carefully curated garden, his pride and joy, suddenly felt exposed, vulnerable. The air thickened around him.

He swallowed hard, the muscles in his throat constricting. He stammered a reply, something about the age of the tree and its beauty. Her gaze pinned him. His carefully crafted persona, the calm, collected homeowner, crumbled before his eyes.
