The knock echoed in the empty house, amplifying her dread. It was Mrs. Petrov, her new neighbor. She had a reputation. Her yard was a tangle of weeds and questionable landscaping choices. Now she was at her door.

“Hello, dear! Gorgeous yard, just gorgeous. Say, I was admiring the sun… would you mind terribly if I… borrowed a bit for a garden? Just a little corner?” The request felt like a personal insult, a judgment on her carefully cultivated space. Her stomach churned. She looked around, desperate to escape.
