The constant whine of the electric saw was a persistent mosquito in Leo's ear. He couldn’t concentrate on his taxes. Every hour, like clockwork, the noise would intensify, followed by a series of bangs and crashes. He felt like his head was inside a drum. Why was Mrs. Gable undertaking such a massive undertaking? He hadn't seen her in weeks.

He went outside, peering around the fence. The back of her house was now a chaotic jumble of exposed beams and tarps. A single, dusty window was staring back at him, like a vacant eye. He ran his hand through his hair, a knot of confusion forming in his stomach. He'd lived here for twenty years, and he’d never witnessed anything like this.

Leo sighed and gave up on his taxes for the day. He grabbed a beer from the fridge and sat on his porch, watching. He couldn't help himself.
