"Did you see what they're doing next door?" Sarah asked her husband, Mark, as she stirred her pasta. Mark grunted in response, his eyes glued to the TV. She sighed. He was the one who could be so easily distracted, and she was the one who was beginning to feel a sense of… perplexity.

She'd baked a cake for the new neighbors a few weeks ago, the ones who had just bought the old Victorian. They'd seemed lovely and normal. Now, the house looked like it was being devoured by some kind of construction monster.

"I need to make a batch of cookies for them," Sarah said aloud. She’d see what was happening. She needed to know. The notion felt imperative, like a task she had to complete.
