“Honey, did you hear about the Johnsons?” Mark said, as he sat down at the table. He was fiddling with his fork. His wife, Emily, looked up from her computer. She was preoccupied, she didn’t really want to have this conversation.

“No, what?” she said.

“They’re doing some massive renovation,” he said. He paused, watching her. “The whole house is just gone, basically.”

Emily frowned. “Oh? I thought they just moved in a few months ago. Why would they be redoing everything?” she asked. She knew the answer was probably nothing, but still, she didn't understand. She found herself imagining all sorts of absurd scenarios, her mind racing.
