“Okay, so, the first thing is the filing system,” Maria began, her voice sounding unusually high-pitched, even to her own ears. It felt as if a heavy weight had suddenly settled on her shoulders. Her replacement was a young man named Jake, who was already meticulously taking notes.

She had always prided herself on her organizational skills. Now, she was supposed to impart them to someone else. It made no sense. She felt a vague sensation of being… displaced.

She gestured toward the chaotic array of folders on her desk. “It might seem complicated at first…” Her voice trailed off. She found herself picking at a loose thread on her sweater. She felt discombobulated, like she was standing on unstable ground.
