The rhythmic thud of the hockey puck against the boards was a soundtrack to Leo's confusion. He had thrived as a left winger, his speed and agility his greatest assets. Now, Coach Petrov called him aside, a grim look etched across his face.

"Leo, we need you to play defense from now on," he stated. Leo’s shoulders slumped. He felt a sudden, profound tiredness. Defense? He struggled to imagine himself as a defensive player, blocking shots and battling in front of the net.

He looked around the rink, at his teammates laughing and jostling each other. A strange hollowness opened up in his chest. His hands felt clammy. His breath hitched as he tried to respond.

"But… I don't... I don't know how to play defense," he finally sputtered, his voice cracking. Petrov just gave a shrug. Leo felt a surge of disorientation, a sense of falling, even though he remained standing perfectly still.
