"So, you're competing with Clara too?" The hiring manager had a knowing glint in his eye. Daniel felt his carefully constructed composure begin to crack.

He swallowed hard, the muscles in his throat suddenly tight. This was unexpected. He had assumed his interview was a private affair. Now, the weight of the situation crashed down upon him, crushing him.

He cleared his throat. "Yes, sir." His voice sounded hollow, distant even to his own ears. He fiddled with the edge of his blazer, his fingers clumsy and awkward. The room swam, threatening to tilt on its axis.
