The string quartet’s rendition of “Here Comes the Bride” was a shrill, unwelcome intrusion into Leo’s quiet contemplation of the floral arrangements. He’d been trying to identify the specific variety of hydrangea when *she* walked in. His jaw clenched. What was *she* doing here? He felt a sudden, inexplicable heat flush his cheeks.

He spotted her across the room, laughing with a group of people he didn't know. Her hair was different – shorter, styled in a way he’d never seen before. She looked… happy. And that, more than anything, sparked a disquiet in him. He downed the rest of his champagne in one gulp, the bubbles doing little to soothe the sudden dryness in his throat.

He attempted a casual wave, a gesture he instantly regretted. Her eyes met his, and a flicker of something passed across her face – surprise? Amusement? He couldn't decipher it. He abruptly turned and made for the buffet table, suddenly ravenous.
