He’d almost forgotten how vibrant the colors of a wedding could be. Sunlight streamed through the windows, illuminating the carefully arranged tables and the chatter of guests. Then, amidst the crowd, he saw her. The sight of her triggered a cascade of conflicting emotions. Confusion, maybe? He wasn’t sure.

He watched her from across the room, feeling like a stranger observing a landscape. Her laughter carried on the air, light and carefree. He remembered the sound of her laughter. He didn't know how to place the feeling in his chest – a kind of dull ache.

He'd planned on sticking to the periphery, enjoying the open bar and the lively music. But the closer she got, the more difficult that became. He found himself subtly adjusting his position, trying to avoid her path. It was a futile gesture, he realized, when he found himself backing into a waiter with a tray of hors d'oeuvres.
