A tremor ran through Amelia as she read the letter. The hospital’s official stationery, crisp and impersonal, offered apologies and a request for a follow-up appointment. It claimed she had a pre-existing condition, a rare genetic disorder, completely at odds with her otherwise vibrant health. Her breath hitched.

She stood and walked to the window, the city lights blurring through a sudden film of tears. The world outside, always so predictable, felt fractured and strange.
