It felt as though the floor had tilted. The nurse had explained the error in a calm, professional manner, but the words still swirled around Arthur's head, refusing to coalesce into a coherent picture. He’d never had any of those conditions.

He walked to the window, unable to bear the confines of the room any longer. He pressed his forehead against the cool glass, staring out at the parking lot, each car a stranger. He felt detached, as if he were observing his own life from a great distance.
