They’d been together for years. Years. Now, Sam was learning Polish. Amy found him in the living room, a textbook open on his lap. He started when she walked in, and shut it immediately.

She felt a hollowness in her stomach, an emptiness that seemed to echo through the entire house. She couldn't understand the sudden need to learn Polish, a language they had no connection to.

They hadn't spoken about it. He had avoided her.

The silence between them felt deafening. She felt as if she was standing on the edge of a precipice, unsure of what lay below.
