Gemotions

The antique shop was dimly lit, dust motes dancing in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom. Amelia ran a finger across the smooth, cool surface of a tarnished silver picture frame. It was supposed to be a surprise, a thoughtful gift for David's birthday. Except… he'd already given her this very frame last week. A knot tightened in her stomach.

She hadn't told him about the frame. She had bought it on a whim. The shopkeeper, a woman with eyes as old as the furniture, just nodded when she showed it to her, as if this were commonplace. Amelia’s hand trembled slightly as she took out her phone, intending to call David. But instead, she just stared at the little frame, the silver reflecting a distorted version of her own puzzled face.
