He’d found his favorite pen, the one with the cracked nib, sitting on his roommate's desk. That was the first thing. Then, he noticed the small, almost imperceptible shift in the books on his shelf. Someone had moved them.

His stomach was churning. It was a subtle, almost imperceptible disturbance. He sat down on the edge of his bed, fiddling with the frayed edge of the blanket. He glanced at the closed journal on his desk, its cover facing directly at him.

"Everything alright, man?" his roommate, Ben, asked, strolling in. He looked too cheerful, his eyes too bright. He smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "You look… pale."
