The delivery person, with a curt nod, had simply dropped the box and disappeared. Now, Emily stood in the hallway, staring at the package addressed to "Dr. Evelyn Reed." The name meant nothing to her, and neither did the sender's address. She shifted her weight, a knot forming in her stomach.

She dragged the box into the kitchen. She glanced around the room, then back at the box. Something about the plain brown wrapping, the lack of return address, was unsettling. After a few minutes of silent contemplation, she decided to open it.
