The aroma of freshly cut grass, usually a comfort, now seemed to mock him. John watched the other players celebrating their spot on the team. He was sure he’d made the cut, based on the last week's scrimmages.

Coach Thompson had been praising his dedication. He had run the sprints with the fastest players. He had improved his passing skills. It felt like a fever dream when the coach had pulled him aside. He had explained that they had to make cuts.

John looked at the roster taped to the wall, his name nowhere in sight. The sun felt unusually hot on his neck.
