The clipboard in Coach Evans' hand seemed to be a heavy weight. He looked at Ben. Ben had been working hard. He had expected to see his name listed with the rest of the players.

The explanation that followed made little sense. It mentioned numbers, strategy. Ben felt a strange detachment, like he was observing the scene from outside himself. His legs were shaking.

He stood in the hallway, watching the victorious players as they high-fived each other. He felt a deep ache in his chest, a vacuum in his chest, sucking out the air.
