The afternoon sun streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Sarah kept pushing the laptop aside, only to bring it back. She’d been avoiding the news all day, but curiosity had won. She'd opened a new tab, searched, and there it was.

She thought of all the times she'd devoured this author's books, how she'd felt like she knew her, understood her. The feeling was suddenly replaced with a deep unease. She kept scanning the comparison documents, the highlighted passages screaming at her. The wording was eerily familiar. The plots, too.

She ran her hand through her hair, a nervous gesture she often made when stressed. Her throat felt tight. The world seemed to shrink, the air thick and heavy. This couldn't be happening.
