He ran a hand over his face. The evidence was damning: his unfinished novel, the one he had stopped working on years ago, now formed the backbone of the best-selling book. He understood that. He was angry but also confused. He kept rereading the evidence.

He stood up, and his legs wobbled. He felt a sudden, profound disorientation. The feeling was like standing on shifting sand. This author was his hero. How could his idol, the person he’d looked up to, have done this?
