The flyer lay on the table, face up. "Leo's Carnival!" it shouted, a riot of colors and cheerful fonts. Then, a quick glance at her phone revealed another message: “Sophia’s Formal Affair!” A prickling sensation began between her shoulder blades. Sarah’s breath hitched in her chest.

She picked up the carnival flyer again, then tossed it aside. She walked to the window, staring out at the grey sky. She bit down on her lip, a nervous habit she hadn’t indulged in for ages.

The two friends had never seemed to clash. This was entirely out of character. She ran her fingers through her hair, smoothing down the stray strands. Something felt wrong, terribly wrong.
