Gemotions

The scent of chlorine hung in the air, a familiar aroma that conjured vivid memories. He found her at the pool, sitting on the edge, her feet dangling in the water. He took a deep breath. He and Emily had spent countless summers at this very pool.

"Emily? Remember? You used to always try to steal my goggles," he said, forcing a smile. She turned, her expression neutral.

"I'm sorry, I don't think I do," she responded quietly. He felt a strange disconnect, like a vital part of him had been lost. She looked as if she had never seen him before. He stood frozen, the warmth of the sun suddenly failing to reach him.
