All the success stories she'd once idolized, all the authors published by Veridian Books, her dream publisher, seemed to laugh at her from the shelves.

She wandered aimlessly through the aisles, the familiar scent of old paper and ink usually comforting. Today, it felt suffocating. She picked up a copy of a book by one of her literary heroes, its cover shimmering under the fluorescent lights. Suddenly she dropped it, as if it had burned her.
