Clara stared at the image on her phone, a picture of her parents from their wedding day. Her mother, a nurse, was about to retire. The venue was decorated in cheerful colors. Laughter, chatter, the gentle strains of background music. Clara felt a growing sense of unease. Her palms began to sweat. When her name was announced, she felt a profound disconnect, like she had walked into a parallel dimension.
