The fluorescent lights flickered again, plunging the elevator into a brief, unsettling darkness before regaining their sickly glow. She flinched, her heart rate spiking. Her coworker, Paul, began whistling a jaunty tune, a stark contrast to the churning anxiety she was experiencing.

She rubbed her temples, trying to clear her head. The silence, when the lights were steady, was almost worse than the flickering. It amplified the growing sense of wrongness, the feeling that she had stumbled into a situation beyond comprehension.
