From the moment she'd found the letter in a box of old photographs, Clara couldn't shake the sensation of bewilderment. Her grandmother, the woman who'd always been a pillar of strength, had apparently considered walking away from her business, a successful dress shop she'd built from nothing.

She stared at the elegant cursive, a style she remembered from her childhood. She found herself sitting on the edge of her grandmother's old bed, the sheets still smelling faintly of lavender. The letter was short, to the point. The reasons, unstated. A vague reference to ‘new opportunities.’

Her breath hitched. She picked at a loose thread on the quilt. The mystery was a weight on her shoulders. She wanted to know the truth, to understand what had changed her grandmother’s mind, but the letter offered no answers.
