The maple had crashed, flattening Mr. Henderson’s shed. The impact looked like a cartoon, a sudden, brutal force. Sarah watched from her kitchen window, sipping her coffee. The cup felt cold in her trembling hands. She lowered it, the liquid sloshing dangerously close to the rim.

She had been planning to bake today, a lemon cake for her book club. The thought now seemed absurd, alien. She rubbed her arms, though she wasn't cold. How could such a thing just happen? There was no storm, no warning. She leaned against the counter, suddenly exhausted.
