Rain lashed against the windows as Amelia stared at the crisp, cream-colored envelope. She hadn't seen the handwriting in over twenty years. A shaky, looping script she recognized instantly, despite the time that had passed. Her pulse quickened. What could it possibly say? She turned it over and over in her hands, the paper almost glowing in the dim light of her living room. It was addressed to her old married name, a name she hadn't used since the divorce.

She sank into the plush armchair, the letter still unopened. Her fingers fumbled with the seal. The silence in the room was deafening, the only sound her shallow breaths. The accusations, the hurt, the sheer betrayal of that long-ago day slammed back into her, a tidal wave of remembered emotion. Why now? Why after all this time?
