The letter arrived with the morning mail, a thin, almost apologetic presence amongst the bills and junk mail. Sarah had almost tossed it, assuming it was another advertisement. Something made her pause, the unfamiliar return address piquing her curiosity. She peeled open the envelope, her hand trembling slightly.

A rush of cold air seemed to invade the small kitchen. The words, simple and direct, felt like a punch to the gut. She dropped the letter on the counter, then quickly picked it up again, the paper crinkling in her grip. Her breath hitched. The blood drained from her face.
