The small, cramped apartment felt smaller still as Mark read the letter. He felt like he was suffocating. He reread the words over and over, as if by sheer force of will, he could change their meaning. The room seemed to be tilting, the walls closing in. He felt a sudden, urgent need to escape.

He crumpled the letter in his fist, his knuckles white. The bitterness of the past rose up, choking him. He had dedicated his life to moving on, to leaving her behind. Now this… this felt like a betrayal. He clenched his jaw, battling back the wave of emotions that threatened to overwhelm him.
