He stared at the letter, its presence incongruous amidst the sterile environment of his office. His palms began to sweat. He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous tic. He'd thought he was past all this.

He felt an unsettling disquiet in the pit of his stomach. A sense of unease, like the sudden, unexpected drop of an elevator. He reread the words, the familiar handwriting, the apology. Why now? What was the point? He felt like he had been transported back in time, reliving a nightmare he thought he'd escaped.
