She found the absence first. A void in the landscape of her memory, a space her mind automatically filled with green, with rustling leaves. Then, the reality. Amelia pulled her car to a stop and stared. The familiar curve of the driveway, the weathered fence – all the same, yet profoundly different. Where her grandmother’s weeping willow had once cascaded, now there was only a raw, glaring emptiness. A hand instinctively rose to her mouth, fingers brushing her lips. A small sound escaped her, a breath hitched in her throat. She got out of the car, her legs suddenly heavy.
