"So, you're saying…someone *died* here?" Martha asked, her voice thin. The police officer, dispatched after she’d found a strange, metal object buried in the rose bushes, had confirmed it. A coldness spread through her. The officer’s description of the scene, pieced together from old files, felt oddly familiar, as though she’d dreamt it. She tugged at her collar, feeling a sudden heat. That comforting, sun-drenched living room felt suddenly…wrong. A sense of unease settled into her bones, making her want to flee.
