The old woman, Mrs. Gable, watched the television, her gaze fixed on the flickering screen. The detective on the show was investigating a crime scene. She knew the feeling. The news reporter had given the address of the house in the opening paragraph. Mrs. Gable's breath hitched. She had always felt a strange disquiet, a feeling of being watched, in the house she’d inherited from her grandmother. Now, the memories, previously dismissed, flooded her with a sudden, unsettling clarity. She got up, slowly, her bones aching with a weariness that went beyond age.
