The news arrived via a letter, the crisp white paper seeming to mock him. Inside were official documents, the stark language of the legal system, detailing the existence of a half-sister. Daniel felt a coldness wash over him, as if he’d been plunged into icy water. He let out a sharp, involuntary exhale.

He reread the letter, the words blurring and shifting on the page. He slammed the letter down on the table, the action a release of the sudden anger building within him. He stood up abruptly, pacing back and forth in the living room.

He thought of his parents, the life he thought he knew, and the comfortable routine that had been shattered. He suddenly felt the need to get away, to escape the confines of his apartment. He grabbed his keys and headed out, the city streets calling him, promising some kind of respite.
