He was driving when he received the call, the words of the lawyer slicing through the afternoon. A half-brother. The information, so casual in its delivery, had the power to stop him in his tracks. He gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned white.

He pulled over to the side of the road, the car vibrating as the engine idled. He stared out the window, at the passing landscape, which seemed unfamiliar and unreal. The world had shifted on its axis. He felt a pressure building in his chest.

He needed to process this information, but how? He took a deep breath, trying to calm the sudden racing of his heart. He reached for his phone, then hesitated. He put the car in drive, suddenly needing to move, needing to get away from the static, from the uncertainty.
