The safe. He'd never known it existed. It was tucked behind a framed print in the study, a small, unassuming metal box. He turned the dial, the tumblers clicking softly. Inside, were stacks of hundred dollar bills. Emily, his wife, had been quietly accumulating wealth. A wave of nausea washed over him.

He slammed the safe door shut, the sound echoing in the silent room. He suddenly felt a need for fresh air, for something to clear his head. He rushed outside, stumbling a little as he went. The familiar scent of roses from their garden was no longer comforting, but suffocating.

He stared at the sky. He had always thought he knew her. He felt a searing pain in his chest, a deep ache. He wondered if he was wrong about everything.
