The email arrived in the middle of a perfectly ordinary Tuesday. From: Arthur Penhaligon. Subject: The Willow. My pulse quickened. My neighbor, Arthur, was a man of routine and predictability. This was… jarring.

The message was short. He proposed removing the willow tree on the property line. His stated reasons, something about root damage, felt hollow. I stared at the screen, a strange hollowness filling my chest. I read the email again, and again. It was as if I was missing a crucial piece of information, a hidden key.

I went outside and looked at the willow. Its graceful branches swayed in the gentle wind, untouched by any apparent threat. The simplicity of the email’s proposition was completely belied by the chaotic internal storm that was brewing.
